CREATING DRAMA IN A WEST LONDON GARDEN:
A GRASS AMPHITHEATRE

This professional couple, both leaders in their fields in the media world, had recently moved to London from a large house in the country and found an early 20th century house in West London with a large garden (25 m x 20m) which would accommodate their large family.

The garden had been greatly loved at one time but had been let go in recent times. The couple wanted a much more modern garden with good quality garden lighting, contemporary style fish pond and ordered and contemporary planting.

It had an old fashioned rockery and pond in a sunken area just off the house and we proposed that this area should be transformed into a sunken grassed area using some of the sandstone rocks and stones from the old rockery - so a grass amphitheatre was created.

The amphitheatre is used for as a seating area by both adults and teenagers both by day and night (it is cross-lit at night) and is fun for the youngest daughter who can use it as a play arena. The other main features of the garden, is pale limestone paving contrasting with the large lawn and gravel, an L-shaped water feature with two jet spouts and carefully placed lighting to highlight the mature yew trees and laurels. The limestone pavers are also used to create a geometric pattern cut into the lawn to take the eye down the garden to the childen's play area.

The planting is a combination of shade tolerant planting on one side of the garden under the mature laurels, holly trees and laurels, using plants with winter interest including Cornus alba, and two large beds with sun-loving mediterranean plants such as Lavender and perennials using the client's chosen palette of red and orange.

The lighting is dramatic, using uplighting to highlight tree bark, moonlighting and strong directional light for some of the larger trees. The Box balls in the amphitheatre are cross lit and up lit and there are two pool lights in the water feature.
