Large roof terrace for 37 Degrees Gym and Health Club

Our client had opened a new gym in converted building in West London and they had the good fortune to have a fantastic and very large roof space (around 400 square metres of usable space) which they wanted to open up for their members to use. This provided a unique opportunity to maximise this space.  The views are wonderful from the space, but as the terrace is high, wind and exposure to all kinds of weather would be an issue.

Once all the building regulations and health and safety issues had been complied with, Charlotte Rowe Garden Design was given the brief to create a multi-purpose space – it was to have an area which could be used for classes, a small space which could be converted at a future date to a space for beauty treatments and relaxation, it would have a mobile cafe area, some loungers and at the same time it should look good both during the day and, importantly, at night. Not only could members use it as a sun terrace, but it would also be used for hospitality events.

"The space needs to work both during the day when members use it as a relaxation area and also at night when it is used for hospitatlity events."

Charlotte Rowe Garden Design created a large (100 square metre) raised deck area which could be used for classes as required or simply as an area to enjoy.  Next to this a smaller square decked area (10 square metres) which would later have a pergola added so that it could be closed off for beauty treatments.

The rest of the space was to be used for the cafe/sitting area with tables and chairs and sun loungers.

Planters were designed in dark anthracite steel and planted a range of plants which could withstand exposure to strong sun and wind. These included gold stemmed bamboo as screening to the South West and a number of clear stemmed olive trees under-planted with creeping thyme as well as Buxus cubes interspersed with grasses (Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’ and Stipa tenuissima) which sway gently in the wind.

.At night the space is spectacular –with uplighters under all the trees, exterior cube lights between the loungers and colour change uplights in the decking.

"It is the perfect space for large events."
